Continuing our season of delicious jelly beans (we hope), today we are trying another new one.
Sweetarts Jelly Beans!
The back of the package shows us that there were made by the Ferrara candy company and not a 3rd party. That definitely bodes well.
Instead of telling us the flavors on the back of the Jelly Bean bag, we see "Why Choose?" along with mini Chewy, Chewy Extreme Sour, Ropes Bites, and Original Sweetarts.
The back of the Sweetarts Chewy box shows the five flavors of Cherry, Grape, Lemon, Apple, and Orange.
But um... we seem to be missing something.
Sweetarts Jelly Beans compared with the Original Sweetarts!
There we go! All the colors... except...
Really? No orange? They don't have orange in the Original Sweetarts flavors?
Alli - I know how we can make orange!
Haha. Combining the red and yellow Sweetarts? I don't think it works quite like that Al.
So instead, we went back to the box of Sweetarts Mini Chewys and pulled out the Orange from there. Phew! Now we have a complete taste test.
As far as color matching of the different flavors goes, the Original Sweetarts are definitely more pale. I get why the Jelly Beans can't be that color though. You want them bold and standing out.
First up, the Sweetart Jelly Beans.
Blue:
Joe - I might be imagining it, but my shell seemed to crumble apart, like a Sweetart texture.
Ian - Is that supposed to be blue raspberry?
Alli - It tastes like cotton candy.
Theresa - That's weird.
Joe - I get cotton candy flavor too.
Theresa - I get a little bit of soap flavor.
Joe - Soap?
Theresa - Uh huh.
Pink:
Ian - Wow!
Alli - Strawberry maybe?
Ian - I'm getting more cherry vibes.
Joe - But that is a really good flavor.
Orange:
Joe - Yep!
Ian - That's Orange.
Ian - That's Orange.
Joe - I feel like they've stepped up their game.
Ian - I think they just put a mini chewy inside each jelly bean, and that's how they got the flavor right.
Green:
Alli - That's apple!
Theresa - I don't like that one. It does taste like apple though. It reminds me of those Lemonhead friends. Do you remember Grapeheads, Cherryheads, and Appleheads? This tastes like an Applehead.
Yellow:
Alli - Cleaner!
Theresa - Yeah, nope! I don't like that.
Joe - That one I don't connect with. Too lemony.
Grape:
Joe - That's a good grape. That's the grape I want from my Sweetart!
Theresa - I like it.
Joe - Like Nerds grape kinda.
And the Original Sweetarts
Pink:
Ian - That tastes just like the jellybean.
Joe - I'm not getting a specific flavor. It's fruity. But it's not clear to me if it's cherry.
Theresa - I think it's cherry.
Alli - I like the jelly beans better than the Original Sweetarts.
Joe - Yeah, no chalky texture.
Theresa - But you can suck on the tablets and they could last longer.
Joe - Until you bite them.
Purple:
Joe - That is grape.
Green:
Joe - Ian, you'll have to tell us if it's apple, or something else.
Ian - It's apple.
Joe - The Original is a stronger green apple flavor.
Theresa - I don't like the green apple here either.
Lemon:
Theresa - The Lemon flavor is better in the mini Chewys. It's more "tart" than "cleaner" flavor.
Joe - Agreed. The candy has a better lemon flavor.
Theresa - The Original I like better.
Joe - Yeah, it's not as harsh. Sweetart lemon is more mellow.
Blue:
Joe - Does it taste like Cotton Candy? Or Blue Raspberry?
Alli - Neither. It tastes like Kool-Aid. Like Fruit Punch.
Theresa - I like that blue. I don't like the Jellybean at all.
Joe - That's definitely Fruit Punch.
Orange:
Theresa - The Chewy Sweetart has a stronger flavor orange than the jellybean.
Joe - Yep.
Ian - The jellybeans only got it okay this time.
Theresa - Texturewise, I still prefer the mini Chewys to the Originals. Trying both at once. Definitely different flavors.
Alli - I don't dislike either. They just don't taste like each other.
It's not Skittles, so we can't technically "Taste the Rainbow", but we'll put all of the flavors of each together and see what it tastes like.
Trying all 6 flavors of both types! That's a lot of sugar!
No one particular flavor stood out to me. It was all just a big fruity mouthful.
Joe - That's a lot of fruit flavor!
Overall, not a bad showing for Sweetarts Jelly Beans, but not exactly the same like the Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, and Starbursts.
Tasting 12 different candies in one mouthful, especially SweeTarts flavors, is a brave experiment! :-)...big mix of sweet and tart! Sort of a mixed bag for the jelly beans, but texture-wise, I think it's preferable than the Original SweeTarts tablet form :-) Alli was thinking outside the box when she offered up her "orange" version by combining red & yellow :-) EOM
