Fall Foliage in Vermont 2025 - 2025/10/02

Happy Fall! As summer winds to an end everywhere in the US except Florida (it's still super hot here), it's the season where leaves turn from bright green to yellows, oranges, and reds, before falling off the trees for the season. We love going to different places to experience fall foliage and this year, we're headed to Vermont!

We were awake and out the door by 6:30am in order to get to the airport for our flight.

We had to plan this trip months in advance, and you never know that far in advance what the fall foliage situation will be. For the past couple weeks, Theresa has been watching the color reports on explorefall.com to see what the reports are looking like. As our trip got closer, the predictions were looking really good that we'd be in areas with High and Peak Color! Perfect!

We parked our car in a lot and caught the shuttle to the airport.

Took the tram to our gate.

And loaded onto our flight with no issues! Perfect! We're in our own row!

Welcome to New Hampshire! We made sure to pack cold weather clothes to the chillier weather.

Alli was hoping we'd get a white van. And we did! Theresa and I were happy that it was a hybrid! For the whole trip of hundreds of miles, we ended up averaging 32mpg!

Since T booked it, she drove us off the lot. We've got a 3 hour drive in front of us, so we're getting settled in.

Love the signs. Welcome to New Hampshire!

But um... These leaves are very very green. Good thing we're headed north!

Before we get too far, I think some snacks would be good. Let's stop by Sam's Club to load up.

And look who we found! That's right! It's Gram, Pop Pop, Grandpa, and Grammy!
This fall foliage trip isn't just for us! It's always more fun to do it with friends and family! They flew in to Boston the night before (a little further drive today) and we met up along the drive! And it's not just the grandparents joining us. Theresa's sister and her husband are coming too!

Grabbing a little bit of lunch together before we go on. Can't beat that $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, or $1 frozen yogurt.

As we've gotten closer to our travel dates, the reports on explorefall.com have changed. The leaves are changing faster than previously expected. Theresa's ideal is High Color, since at Peak Color some of the trees have started to lose their leaves.

The parents are driving behind us and together we would caravan northward.
The leaves along the side of the road are starting to turn colors.

And the trees on the hillsides, eh... well, they're there.

Some nice yellows.

And it's always pretty to see the fall foliage along with water.

But it's the hillsides that we were really hoping for the bright fall colors.

Both Theresa and her sister were a little concerned.
Theresa - I didn't come here to see sticks.

The Moore Reservoir is looking really low, looking a dozen feet low, exposing sandbars in the middle. Is that why we're seeing so many trees that are bare already and have just dropped their leaves?

Welcome to Vermont! Here's hoping for some better colors!

Time for a pit stop! Let's check out the Waterford Welcome Center.

Ooh. I bet that warm fire is nice in the wintertime.

We were warned that once you sit in that rocking chair, you're not going to want to get up.
They're right. Instead of being a stiff seat and back, the rope support and segmented blocks conformed more to you and made it very comfortable.

Of course Richard found coffee!

What all does Vermont have to offer? The bees here love all the flowers and people use the wax and honey for skincare. Plus there's a large woodworking community.

Different places that you can go visit.

Including of course the Ben & Jerry's Factory Experience.

Back on the road as we continued to go North, we were more and more encouraged by the views.
Trees along the roadway that had nice colors.

But there we go. Here's some hillsides that aren't bare.

As the afternoon wore on and the sun started getting lower on the horizon, the colors of trees on the hillside looked brighter and more saturated.

So, with all these people in our party, where are we all going to stay?
Like I said, this is something that we've been planning for months and months. Way back in March, we visited the Couture Maple Farm to see how maple syrup was made. Instead of taking the RV, we stayed at the Couture's Bed & Breakfast. We loved our stay! And so, before we left in March, we reserved the entire house, all 4 bedrooms, for the family to come out in October to join us for fall foliage!

I know Grammy has missed the grandkids.

Shortly after we parked, Aunt Rita and Uncle Ty pulled up.

It didn't take long for Mickey and Richard to find Jake Couture and start talking.

I've written up so many stories of our visits to the Coutures that all the family was looking forward to meeting them.

Jake brought us into the barn to meet their two beefers.

It's Pixie and Dixie!

Next, we'd see Mrs. Pauline.

Good to see you again!

Looking forward to a fun couple days!

Tyler brought Theresa 3 of his giant German Johnson tomatoes.

We got the tour of the house, Mom and Chi especially interested in the many quilts that Pauline has made.

We went ahead and bought a large box of my favorite maple candies to share with the family. These were made with the syrup that we saw being made back in March! And they're delicious!

Now that we're all settled, we've got to run out and grab some supplies and food. Love the views here.

Wow. So nice.

We stopped at Walmart and grabbed car snacks and the fixins for a couple dinner meals.

Then grabbed a few pizzas for dinner.

Happy to all be here together.
Theresa brought a few "conversation cards" that we bring out at home during dinner, and we enjoyed the prompts that helped lead the conversation to some deeper topics than "how's the weather at home".

Ty and Rita brought some cannolis for dessert.

And to end the night, we gathered in the Couture's living room to watch a video showing the history of maple syrup and following along with the production of that delicious Vermont treat. Jake watched along with us (I'm sure he's seen this video hundreds of times now) and answered the many questions we had.
After that, we all retired to our rooms. It's been a long day and I think everyone was ready to head to bed. Tomorrow we've got a lot of things planned!
