Peeps Rice Krispy Treats - taste test comparison

Happy Easter! We're trying out lots of the new Peeps flavors that came out this year and today we're trying Rice Krispy Treat flavored Peeps! And even better than trying Peeps alone is hanging out and doing things with friends! We're going to make Rice Krispy Treats together and see how the Peeps Compare!

Let's make some Rice Krispies!

I gathered all the ingredients and everyone joined me at the picnic table outside. There's an official recipe to make Rice Krispy Treats but we don't quite follow that. We've been making these delicious treats for years and years now and there's a couple extra things we like to make them taste a little better.

Ezra helped measure out the proper amount of butter. Raegan dumped an entire bag of Jet Puffed Mini Marshmallows into the giant cooking pot.

For some reason all the kids wanted to sample the mini marshmallows. Even though I just bought them yesterday, they felt the need to do a quality control check.

This induction cooktop has worked out amazingly. I can dial in an exact temperature to heat up the marshmallows and butter. Low and slow is the way to go here. We want them just barely melted.

Here's an extra ingredient we use in our Rice Krispy Treats. Extra salt! Nora helped measure out the salt.

Then sprinkled it into the pot.

Ian measured out another one of our bonus ingredients, vanilla extract, while I weighed out the proper amount of Rice Krispies.

One those marshmallows were just about ready to fall apart, the pot came off the heat and I dumped in the cereal. That's when everyone got a turn at mixing mixing mixing to get those Rice Krispies coated while the marshmallow was still warm and gooey.

Great job Nora.

Go for it Ezra!

I dumped the contents of the pot onto a waiting piece of parchment while the kids held down all four corners. It was a bit of a windy day, so things were threatening to fly away.

You can't scrape everything out of the pot. I grabbed a few extra spoons plus the spatula and everyone got to try the warm marshmallowy cereal.

But what we're really here to compare those too are these Peeps Rice Krispies Treats! It's fun to see that classic blue color on the front of the package along with Snap, Crackle, and Pop!

Make Fun Family Memories the Rice Krispies Way! We definitely do! It's lots of fun to make treats with friends!

Along with the 2 extra ingredients, salt and vanilla extract, we feel like our Rice Krispy Treats should be extra gooey. We used about 30% more marshmallows than the recipe calls for and I think it's a lot better that way.

The Peeps packaging says this is a Marshmallow Mash Up. Enjoy the flavor of two iconic treats in one sweet Chick!

All the Peeps have properly placed eyeballs today! I'm giving them a 5/5!

Our giant Rice Krispies Treat is shaped like a Peep, right? Right?
Alli - We need like a chocolate chip for the eye!

Everyone grab a Peep!
Alli - They're sticky!
Joe - Sticky like a Rice Krispy Treat?
Ian - It just tastes like a Peep.
Joe - Does it taste a little ricey?
Ian - Oh! It resembles the Peeps Gummies a bit!
Alli - Yeah! The Peeps Gummies!
Alli - But these have a little of that flavor.
Joe - Like vanilla?

Joe - It's not just a normal Peep flavor, you're right. I kinda wish they'd have put real Rice Krispies inside.
Alli - It kinda resembles Rice Krispies, but not really. It tastes like the Peeps chewy candy.
Ian - I wouldn't say it resembles Rice Krispies at all.
Ezra - It just tastes like a marshmallow.
Raegan - Just a marshmallow with sugar on it.
Jacob - There is a little more than a regular Peep. Is it extra vanilla? And maybe some fake butter flavor? I think I like it.
Joe - It's very subtle.
Jacob - There's more essence to it. I like it more than a regular Peep. Regular Peeps are just sweet and don't have much flavor.
Joe - But I wouldn't say "Oh that's a Rice Krispy Treat", which doesn't have a strong flavor in the first place.

Now we'll move on to the real Rice Krispies Treats!
Ian - I have a feeling this is going to be messy! That's the stuff we know and love! This is 10x better!
Joe - Those are super marshmallowy. I see them sticking to your fingers. You guys cooked these well! They are still soft! If it gets too hot, things start to get crunchy. These are perfect!

Alli - We should make Rice Krispy Treats and melt the Peeps down for the marshmallows!
Joe - Which one is better? The Peeps or the Rice Krispy Treats?
Ian - It's not a question. The real Rice Krispy Treats demolished the Peeps.
Raegan - The homemade ones are better.
Ezra - Same.
Joe - I don't know how you can call it a Rice Krispy Treat and not put Rice Krispies in it. They should have had cereal in these! Oh well.

So these weren't the big hit like the Dr Pepper Peeps were, but at least they weren't bad. There's still a few more Peeps flavors to try before the Easter season is over! Which ones will we try next?

  1. What a fun, joint activity for the kids...all ages got to participate to make the treat. I agree that a soft, chewier Rice Krispies treat is better than the "crunchier" version. The extra ingredients in the Flowers' version help make it taste better and allows for that gooier texture! Instead of licking batter from beaters, everyone gets to scrape the pot to enjoy some warm, marshmallowy mini treats :-) Too bad the Peeps wasn't a good comparison this time. EOM
