Proper Good Pizza Soup Taste Test Comparison

It's time for another fun taste test comparison! While I was shopping at my local Aldi, I saw a very unique item on their shelves from Proper Good. Pizza Soup! Sounds a little weird, but definitely like something we would try. And so, I waited until Sunday (our usual pizza day) to break it out and try it!

And of course we're going to try it and compare it to my homemade pepperoni pizza.

I love my new dough mixer. I make a poolish the night before in the mixing bowl, then the next day, just add the rest of the ingredients and mix. No more having to use the small food processor, splitting the dough into multiple batches to fit, and getting overheated dough because it takes so long to bring everything together.

Now I can get silky smooth and super stretchy dough without all that effort.

Just needs to proof for the afternoon and it'll be ready to bake later tonight.

So what's going on with this Proper Good Pizza Soup? The package says it's Pepperoni, Tomato, and Cheese soup that's part of their Craveable Creations. It's a 12oz portion of soup, so only 1 serving.

And we can see through the bottom of the plastic package to see what the soup actually looks like.

It's not just Pizza Soup today though. When it's pizza day, everyone gets whatever personal pizza they like. Ian is liking sausage and olives lately, while Alli wants pineapple and ham. I love a pizza with all the toppings we have on it. Pineapple, pepperoni, sausage, ham, figs, borgonzola cheese, basil, caramelized onions, and red pepper flakes, drizzled with balsamic afterwards. It's a flavor explosion.

And Theresa still loves her Therezza pizza. And she loves a large crust ring to dip in honey afterwards.

But now it's time to make the cheesy pepperoni to go along with the soup. My dough has risen nicely.

I press and stretch it out, leaving a decent crust ring.

Then top it with homemade pizza sauce, mozzarella, and pepperonis.

Lots of pepperonis like the package shows.

Then throw it into my pizza oven. The oven will get over 1000F, but I've found that my pizza likes to cook between 700F-750F. Any hotter and the crust will burn pretty quickly.

But even at those temperatures, it takes less than 2 minutes for the pizza to cook and come out piping hot.

Since it's a beautiful (and hot) summer day, why not try it outside. Which should be first?

Let's go with the soup.
Joe - It's Pepperoni, Tomato, and Cheese soup. The ingredients say it has water, diced pepperoni, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, onions, garlic, sugar, and basil.
Jacob - That's it? It should be good!
Joe - Oh, and less than 2% romano cheese, tapioca, oregano, and other natural flavors.

Every got a spoon and took a taste.
Joe - See if you can't find a piece of pepperoni.
Ian - This is going to be interesting.
Joe - Interesting in a good way?
Ian - I'm not sure.

It wasn't too difficult to find the pepperoni chunks. There were quite a few of them.

Ian (takes a slurp) - No! Not interesting in a good way.
Theresa - That's disgusting.
Jacob - I wouldn't say it's disgusting.

Theresa - I would never eat that again.
Jacob - It's too thin.
Theresa - It has weird spices I don't like. There is some spice in there I do not like at all.
Jacob - But there's in there but things you like.
Theresa - It has to be the "natural flavors".
Joe - Or maybe the cheese cultures.

Joe - I don't taste pepperoni in the soup. When I get some bites of pepperoni chunks, they have the texture of those soup meat bits you might get in Campbell's condensed soup.
Jacob - But that does not need to get into my rotation.
Theresa - There's just some spice in there that I really don't like.
Jacob - And it needs to be thicker.
Joe - The tapioca starch needs to do more heavy lifting. The soup has just a little bit of a kick to it.
Jacob - It does have a little bit of a "cheap pizzaria" flavor to it. The second bite wasn't as bad.

Joe - Now, how would you feel if I told you that 12 ounce portion of soup cost 1 dollar?
Jacob - For a buck? I'd eat it in a pinch.
Theresa - If it cost a dollar, I would never eat it unless I was starving.
Joe - Alli, for a dollar, would you eat that soup?
Alli - If you gave me a dollar?
Hahaha.
Alli - It's not that bad, but I don't want more.

Joe - Okay, well it's not one dollar. That's a five dollar portion of soup.
Jacob - Oh no.
Alli - It might be good to dip your crust in.
Theresa - That would ruin the crust.

But how does it compare to the Pepperoni Pizza.
Jacob - Oh that's good.
Ian - The pizza tastes like pepperoni.

Ian - When you try it side-by-side, there's no comparison.
Joe - Obviously the pepperoni pizza is better.

Well, sorry Proper Good. We didn't like your pizza soup. Later at Walmart, I found a whole line-up of other Proper Good soups. Mostly normal flavors... but that Cheeseburger soup is standing out to me... Perhaps another taste test is in order!
