Celebrating World Honey Bee Day - Third Saturday in August

It's World Honey Bee Day! What started out as National Honey Bee Day back in 2009, by the US Secretary of Agriculture, has now become World Honey Bee Day! We certainly love our honey. For a while, my parents kept us stocked with honey from their very own beehives!

And one thing this family definitely loves is that bees are pollinators! We wouldn't have nearly as many tasty fruits and vegetables without all the hard work of the bees. Do you think maybe Theresa goes a little overboard on the weekly fruits and veggies? Because we have family visiting it's a little more than usual, but not by much.

Theresa's favorite place to get fruit and veggies is our local farmer's market. And her favorite grower is definitely Ken's Top Notch Produce. Depending on the time of year, Nectarines, Asian pears, grapes, pluots, persimmons, cherries, and more.

And Ken is really nice too. He always lets the kids help with the fruit. While everyone else shopped, Ian and Alli got 5 boxes of grapes onto the table for sale. Kinda tells you how long it took them to shop doesn't it?

Making sure to place them gently.

That's a bunch of grapes Ian.

Rita and Theresa picking out their favorites.

Looking elsewhere in the market for persian cucumbers, and T is very particular about the ones she gets. They have to be skinny and short, so we'll all look through to find enough to fill an entire bag. T and the kids will eat them straight.

And in the end, they ended up with about 40 pounds of fruit and vegetables! Oh my! That weighs just a little less than Ian!

Over at Sam's Club, we'd get a bit more fruit and vegetables. And look at that, a Black Cat. Today happens to be Black Cat Appreciation Day too.

Back at home, we laid out all our bounty on the table. Wow that's a lot. This week we'll have:

  1. Lychee Grapes
  2. White Nectarines
  3. Mango Nectarines
  4. Flavor King Pluots
  5. Super Sweet Pluots
  6. Kabocha
  7. Bell Peppers (Red, Yellow, and Orange)
  8. Bananas
  9. Grape tomatoes
  10. Blueberries
  11. Strawberries
  12. Persian Cucumbers
  13. Honey Crisp Apples
  14. Bartlett Pears
  15. Spring Mix
  16. Broccoli
  17. Baby Carrots

Mmm. Korean Honey snacks.

Thank you honey bees!

  1. Happy World Honey Bee Day to you all...raw honey has such nutritional (and medicinal) value, not to mention it adds a nice sweet touch to things! Must have been an interesting hobby for your parents to be beehive keepers and honey makers...pretty neat to get "homemade" honey. Wow...that is a lot of fruit and vegetables...I see a lot of great organic fruits & veggies there...so much healthier and tastier than conventionally grown ones (I'm a big organic fruit & vegetable fan myself!) That was a great video of Ken...can see why T thinks so highly of his organic bounty...Ken seems very personable and really believes in what he does, and enjoys it too! Btw, what Ken said about the "not-so-good looking fruits are often the tastiest" is sooooooo true (also reminds me of a similar analogy regarding restaurants sometimes: the "hole-in-the-wall" places often serve up better/cheaper fare than some of the fancier restaurants) Fun time today! Enjoy your time with the visiting family (I'm sure you all will). EOM
