National Sponge Cake Day and making our own whipped cream - August 23rd

Checking the national day calendar website, looks like today is National Sponge Cake Day!
Angel Food Cake qualifies as a sponge cake, so we picked some up from the grocery store.

And you know what goes great with sponge cake? Whipped Cream!
Kids, have we ever made homemade whipped cream? No? Well I think it's about time we made our own.

There's not all that many ingredients in whipped cream that you make at home. It starts with sugar and one of the recipes I saw suggested using powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar. Not sure if it made a difference, but that was Alli's job to measure out the sugar.

And then Ian gave us a splash of vanilla extract.

Last comes the heavy whipping cream. Ian was very careful to measure out 1 cup.

And Alli carefully poured it in. I had read that it's best to use very cold milk and to even freeze the metal bowl ahead of time.

They each took turns mixing it.

And of course in the end we get to lick the beaters.

Angel Food cake is grandpa's favorite kind of dessert. Especially with strawberries. Yum!
