Holiday Taste Test - Skinny Syrups Holiday Flavor Mixes

Just in time for the Holidays, Skinny Syrups has brought us a huge selection of flavorings for our coffees and drinks! Theresa was shopping at TJ Maxx and found all these different flavors! Sounds like a taste test is in order to see which one is best and if there are any standout favorites!

In all she found 5 different flavors including Gingerbread Latte, Christmas Cookie, Peppermint Bark, Salted Caramel Mocha, and Brown Sugar Cinnamon. That's a lot of syrup to try!

We're fortunate to have Theresa's brother Donald visit for a couple days. Sounds like a great taste test to do together!
Theresa made a couple large lattes and I split it into five different cups.

Thanks for the help getting everything opened up!

To keep things even, I measured 10 milliliters of syrup for each cup.
Theresa thinks we should use a little less syrup, but we want this syrup to be the standout flavor over the coffee.

I poured everyone a small cup of each one.

First up, Gingerbread Latte! Out of all the different flavors, this is the one I was looking forward to the most! I love Gingerbread! Can they capture it in a cookie? The label is very festive with a whipped drink, surrounded by cookies and evergreen branches.

Here we go!
Donald - I like it.
Joe - I don't think it's that strong of a flavor.
Alli - It tastes like yummy yummy coffee.
Theresa - I don't taste gingerbread. It tastes sweet and it has the bite of something, but I don't know what.
Donald - It's not a strong ginger.
Joe - It's sweet. But not flavorful.

In fact, let's just try this syrup straight, without any coffee or milk mixed in.
I did get a small taste of it and again, the gingerbread flavor is lacking.

Next in the lineup is a Christmas Cookie syrup!
Donald - I think Christmas cookie might be like a sugar cookie.
Joe - It has a different kind of smell.
Ian - Like PiƱa Colada.
Joe - I get fruity notes. It's almost like a Crunch Berries.

Joe - It does have more flavor.
Donald - Christmas in a cup.
Theresa - Hawaii Christmas cookie in a cup.
Joe - I don't so much taste cookie.
Theresa - Maybe like a speculoos cookie.
Alli - That is definitely deliciousness.
Theresa - Eh. I'm not really liking that one. It doesn't have the best mouth feel. It reminds me of convenience store coffee.

Peppermint Bark is next. I'd be looking forward to this one more if it was just plain peppermint and not peppermint bark. The peppermint bark implies chocolate, and artificial chocolate flavor is not something I enjoy.

Donald - I do like that this one leaves the coffee flavor intact. The other ones destroy the coffee flavor.
Joe - Maybe 10 mL is too much.
Theresa - I can taste the mint in this one.
Joe - But that artificial chocolate flavor. I can't do it. I don't like this one.

Salted Caramel, but also Mocha. Which means again they are adding artificial chocolate flavors to what might otherwise be a good flavor.

Alli - Yum!
Ian - Eww. It tastes like the thing I had when I went to the dentist.
He recently had his dental cleaning and chose "caramel" for his tooth polish flavor. He was not a fan of it. Guess this one is pretty close to that Dental Polish Caramel. Don't think they'll use that in their advertising.
Donald - Whoa! That's not a good flavor!
Joe - I'm tasting the caramel. But it's so artificial. It's not good.
Theresa - Yuck.

Last is Brown Sugar Cinnamon. I hope this one is good! I hope I can taste both of these flavors.
Donald - I hope there's a good cinnamon flavor.
Ian - This one is GOOD!
Donald - This is my favorite.

So if you had to put them in order, what's the best to the worst?
Alli - Christmas Cookie, Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Peppermint Bark, Gingerbread Latte, and Salted Caramel Mocha is last.
Ian - First is Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Christmas Cookie, Gingerbread Latte, Peppermint Bark, and the not so good Salted Caramel Mocha.
Donald - Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Gingerbread Latte, Christmas Cookie, Peppermint Bark, and Salted Caramel Mocha.
Theresa - Gingerbread Latte, I guess then Peppermint Bark. The other three I don't want to put in my mouth again. Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Christmas Cookie, and Salted Caramel Mocha.
Joe - Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Christmas Cookie, Gingerbread Latte, Peppermint Bark, and Salted Caramel Mocha.

Wow, Salted Caramel Mocha was last on everyone's list.

Theresa - Truthfully though, I wouldn't buy any of these again. I'm a little bit grossed out right now.
Alli - The Salted Caramel Mocha can be thrown in the trash.

Theresa - We need to go back and taste these all again with just 5 mL of syrup. Everything is tasting too artificial to me.
I remade everything and just used 5 mL in each cup.
Theresa - That's better. I can taste the coffee more.
Joe - Peppermint Bark is better with less syrup. I still don't like the Salted Caramel.

With the leftover remnants of all 5 coffee flavors, I poured them all together to make the ultimate holiday drink. The result was... Christmassy. Sweet with a lot of different flavors.
But in general, these Skinny Syrups were not our favorite. I get that they're zero calories, but that artificial taste, plus the lingering aftertaste of many of these made this a one and done taste test.

  1. "One-and-done" sums it up! :-) But the 5 flavors did give you a chance to "be the mad scientist" at the end by mixing up a blended concoction! Those "zero calories" creations are hard to swallow (no pun intended) because of its very artificial nature...however, once in a while, one may stumble on something that's "good" using that zero calorie stuff. Nevertheless, an interesting taste test with some funny/interesting comments...my favorite was "tastes like the thing I had when I went to the dentist" :-) EOM
